Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur

CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-TOLEDO, Ohio - This morning Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), dean of the Ohio delegation and a Toledo Democrat whose ninth congressional district extends to Cleveland, paid a visit to the sheriff's office in Battle Creek, Michigan where several migrant workers are being detained from the Corso's raid by federal customs authorities two weeks ago near Sandusky, Ohio in Erie County.

That raid, orchestrated with guns, rifles, helicopters and law enforcement dogs, resulted in some 114 arrests of suspected illegal immigrants who were employed at Corso's Flower and Garden Center, and it, and other raids across the country, have outraged some members of congress across partisan lines, though congressional Democrats argue that Republicans, led by President Donald Trump, are responsible for the fiasco.

The congresswoman's visit on Monday included conversations with some 30 women being kept at that particular facility as well as a briefing from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, Calhoun County Sheriff Matt Saxton, and members of Homeland Security.

The longest serving woman in the U.S. House of Representatives, Kaptur spoke to many of the women with the help of a bilingual assistant.

She said afterward that her major goal is to ensure that the women have access to legal representation, many of whom left behind children.

Led by (familiesbelong.org), activists and  faith-based groups rallied and marched on Public Square in downtown Cleveland on June 14 as part of a day of opposition across the country to President Trump's racist immigration policies and what activists say is cruel and unconstitutional activity lodged against the immigrant community by ICE.

Speakers included family members impacted by the immigration enforcement tactics.  CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE FOR THE MARCH AND PROTEST

"The current administration is actively seeking out immigrants to separate their families, and to detain, abuse and deport them," said Kathleen Moser, a key organizer of Cleveland's protest. "They have ripped over 700 children from their parents’ arms in just over two weeks."

Congresswoman Kaptur  gave a speech last Thursday detailing the contribution migrant workers make to the American economy and the need for comprehensive immigration reform and trade deals that lift up workers across the North American continent.
