Ohio Ninth Congressional District Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur |
CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-Washington, D.C. - Ohio Ninth Congressional District Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, dean of the Ohio delegation and the longest serving woman in congress, issued a statement after the U.S. Supreme Court last week ruled that the State of Ohio can continue to purge Ohio citizens from the voter rolls.
The decision in the case Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute was decided by the Supreme Court on June 11, a 5-4 decision where the court ruled that states may remove people off the rolls if they skip a few elections and fail to respond to a notice from election officials.
Hence, the high court ruled that Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted did not violate the Voter National Voter Registration Act of 1993.
Congressional Democrats, and others, including Civil Rights organizations across the country such as the NAACP, are livid over the decision.
"This decision by the Trump era Supreme Court emboldens those who want to disenfranchise voters and put up barriers to citizens exercising their constitutional right to vote," said Kaptur, a Toledo Democrat whose ninth congressional district extends to Cleveland. "Purging voters from the rolls is wrong, plain and simple and this 5-4 decision takes us backward."
Kaptur said that voting should be easy and accessible, no matter who you are or where you live, and "it should not be a 'use it or lose it' privilege."
The congresswoman spoke on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court back in January stating Ohioans or any American should not be purged from the voter rolls. She spoke with Oak Harbor Mayer Joe Helle, a veteran, who was not able to vote because he was purged from the voter rolls.
"Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy" said Catherine Turcer, executive director of Common Cause Ohio. "This case highlights the importance of all Ohio voters being proactive and taking time to verify that they are in fact on the voter rolls."
