CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND,Ohio-Early voting in Ohio begins today, April 10, leading up to the state's May 8 primary election on various issues, including state legislative seats, judicial offices, a ballot initiative minimizing statewide gerrymandering of congressional seats, and a governor's race that will bring the state its next governor since Republican John Kasich defeated Democrat Ted Strickland in 2010.
The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections is open for early voting Monday through Friday, beginning today from 8 am-5 pm, with hours extended to 7 pm from April 30-May 7.
Issue 1, the ballot initiative on gerrymandering, is designed to minimize gerrymandering by making the mapping of the state's congressional district more fair to minority voters.
Ohio currently has 16 congressional dsitricts , each represented by the United States House of Representatives, down from 18 since the 2010 census, Repulicans holding 12 of those seats , and Democrats, including 11th congressional district congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge and 9th congressional district congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, holding four.
In the race for governor Mike DeWine, a former U.S. senator and currently the state attorney general, will face Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, the underdog candidate, for the Republican nomination for governor.
The gubernatorial candidates seeking the Democratic nomination are front-runner Richard Chordray, a former state attorney general and former state treasurer, former Cleveland mayor and former congressman Dennis Kucinich, former Ohio Supreme Court justice Bill O'Neil, state Sen. Joe Schiavoni (D-33), and former state representative Connie Pillich.
A popular governor who lost a bid for president in 2016, Kasich is term limited and leaves office in January.
Ohio is a pivotal state for presidential elections and its governor plays a key part in influencing voters.
