CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio-May 6, 2018 marks the fifth-year anniversary of the escape, after a decade of captivity, of Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda Berry from Ariel Castro's Seymour Avenue home on Cleveland's west side, the home of which has since been demolished.

Community members, led by Women's March Cleveland, International Women's Day March Cleveland, Imperialwomencoalition.com, Black on Black Crime Inc, Peace in the Hood, the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Planned Parenthood, the Cleveland Domestic Violence Center, Kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com, Clevelandurbannews.com and community activist women, will remember the abduction, decade-long rape and escape of the Seymour Avenue victims from the wrath of convicted rapist Castro at an anniversary rally and march at 5 pm on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 2207 Seymour Avenue in Cleveland where Castro's home once stood.

The three keynote speakers for the Seymour Ave anniversary rally are state Rep activist and women's and children's rights activist CNN hero Laura Cowan, activist and journalist Kimberly F. Brown of the Brown Report Newspaper, and activist and public school teacher Melissa Svigelj Smith of Badass Teachers Association. Other speakers include family members of raped and murdered women and girls, and activists Marion Clarke of Planned Parenthood, Olga Rosado of the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Khalid Samad, Genevieve Mitchell, Patrice Brown, Don Bryant, Alfred Porter Jr, Dr. Stewart and Valerie Robinson, and Princess Dicee Moore.

Organizers are requesting that participants bring rally signs to the event. Call the Imperial Women Coalition and Women's March Cleveland at 216-659-0473 for more information.

The rally will be led by local activist Kathy Wray Coleman, who has led the anniversary rally practically every year since 2015.

"We are not ready to forget what happened in the 'House of Horrors' on Seymour Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio and we have unfinished business as to heightened rape and murder and other crimes against innocent women and girls," said Coleman, a former Cleveland John Marshall High School biology teacher.

The activist women say the event will also address the Violence Against Women Act, local, county, statewide and national public policy changes sought, and a demand for resources as to violence against women and children, human trafficking, and the epidemic of missing persons.

The Rev Cynthia Smith of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church will open the event with prayer and briefly address women's issues, violence against women and girls  across racial and ethnic lines, as well as the May, 6 58th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1960, a United States federal law that established federal inspection of local voter registration polls and introduced penalties for anyone who obstructed the right to register to vote.

Activists will also call for public policy changes and more resources relative to violence against women and girls locally, countywide, statewide and nationally.

Additionally, activists want more equitable distributions of resources in educational arenas for women and girls, and under the Violence Against Women Act, and via other resource venues, particularly regarding  poor, minority, inner city and LGBT women, girls, and other genders.

Other participating activist groups include Greater Cleveland Independent Black Journalists, Carl Stokes Brigade, Finding The Missing -Ebony Alert, Peace Action, Badass Teachers Association, , Rebuilding Our Village and Protecting Our Children's Safety, Stop Targeting Ohio's Poor, Black Man's Army, Task Force for Community Mobilization, Refusefacism.org, and the Greater Cleveland Immigrant Support Network

A local guitar player and former Cleveland schools bus driver, Castro hanged himself in prison a month into his life sentence without the possibility of parole. He was a sad character and a serial rapist of children and women.

Statistics on nationwide violence against women and girls include the following:

-Violence against women and girls, including rape and murder, remains an epidemic, as does human trafficking

-Women and girls ages 12-34 are at the highest risk for sexual assault

-Poor women are 12 times more likely to get raped

-One out of every six American women has experience an attempted or completed rape and 22 percent of African-American women and 14 percent of Hispanic-American women experience at least one rape or attempted rape in their lifetime
