CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio-The Cleveland Cavaliers, led by megastar LeBron James, beat the Boston Celtics 87-79 Sunday night in a contentious game seven, winning the Eastern Conference Finals and advancing to the NBA Finals, a stunning defeat by the Cavs on the home turf of the Celtics, who lost the series 4-3.
It is the fourth straight time the Cavs have gone to NBA Finals, the first time in 2015, though they have won only one championship title, and in 2016 against the Golden State Warriors, the first championship title in franchise history.
.
Under the leadership of head coach Tyronn Lue, who is Black, the Cavaliers will face either the Golden State Warriors of the Houston Rockets beginning on Thursday, the first game of the NBA Finals..
"We've got a crazy group but they are resilient, they are tough minded, they know what it takes, and the new guys here, they really understand what it takes to win now," said Lue , who then turned and complimented his "coaching crew."
Lue called James the best player in the world and said that James "led by example."
An Akron, Ohio native, James finished with 35 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists.
"This is a heck of an accomplishment for our ball club," said James, "For us to do this and for me to be able to lead these guys is a treat."
He said that he took nothing for granted in sending Boston packing.
"Every possession is its own challenge," said James, who, this year, reached his eight straight NBA Finals in his 15-year NBA career.
James said that the win in Boston Sunday night was a team effort, and he said that part of his success is his integrity and dedication to his trade, and to his family.
"I am true to who I am, I am true to my family, and I am true to my teammates," James said.
The young Boston team was simply just that, "young and green," sports pundits said.
The Cavs won without Kevin Love, who left game six in the first half with a possible head concussion.
Game six against Boston was James' seventh 40 or more points game this post season.
Prior to Sunday's win, the 33- year-old James, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest NBA players of all time, has "won three NBA championships, four NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, three NBA Finals MVP Awards, three NBA All-Star Game MVP Awards, two Olympic gold medals, an NBA scoring title, and the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. James is a 14-time NBA All-Star, 11-time All-NBA first teamer, and five-time All-Defensive first teamer."
James is "the Cavaliers' all-time scoring leader, the NBA All-Star Game career scoring leader, and the NBA career playoff scoring leader."
