Cleveland, Ohio – Ohio Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11), a Warrensville Heights and greater Cleveland area Democrat, is proud to announce that the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) has been awarded a $20 million dollar grant to fund renovations to Green Line light rail platforms. The Department of Transportation has awarded GCRTA with an All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP) grant. The ASAP grant program was created and funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which Brown voted for in 2021. Congresswoman Brown also supported GCRTA's funding request with an official letter of support in April.

 

"I'm proud to announce more federal funding is coming to Northeast Ohio thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law." said Congresswoman Brown, one of three Black women in Congress from Ohio. "This is a big win for our community; $20 million for our transit system that thousands of Ohioans rely on."


Roughly 66 percent of Greater Cleveland RTA riders are Black, data show, and Cleveland is roughly 60 percent Black.

 

"Accessibility is about more than platforms and sidewalks; it represents independence, dignity and ensuring everyone can fully participate in our community. said India L. Birdsong Terry, GCRTA General Manager and CEO. "Once this project is complete, every rail station in our system will be ADA accessible, which is a major milestone for our network."


The DOT's ASAP program provides federal competitive grants to assist eligible entities in financing capital projects to upgrade the accessibility of legacy rail fixed guideway public transportation systems for people with disabilities.

CHICAGO— The Nation of Islam, with deep sadness, announced the recent passing of Brother Louis Farrakhan, Jr., the eldest son of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and Mother Khadijah Farrakhan. The family was aware of a previous heart condition and it appears that Louis, Jr., passed peacefully in his sleep at the family home in Phoenix, Ariz. He was 60 years old.
