Cleveland is a largely Black major American city of some 375,000 people and is led by three-term Black mayor Frank Jackson. also a Democrat like Clyde.

In endorsing Clyde the Plain Dealer editorial board said Clyde is “a steady supporter of Ohioans' voting rights and of making it easier for Ohioans to exercise those rights.”

Kathleen Clyde's qualifications as a leading point person and expert on election laws make her even more qualified the editorial says.

In addition to the tight race for Ohio secretary of state the most watched political races are the statewide races for governor, that pits
Democrat Richard Cordray against Republican, Mike DeWine, state attorney general,
auditor, and treasurer, and two open seats on the seven- member Ohio Supreme Court,
which is currently all-White and all-Republican.
State legislative seats for the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate are also up for grabs.

Races in Cuyahoga Countgy include common pleas and appeals court judge-ships, open Cuyahoga County council seats, and county executive, which pits incumbent Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish, a Democrat, against Republican Peter Corrigan, Corrigan with support from a wide array of Cleveland activists upset at the status quo.
On criminal justice reform, State Issue 1, a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that minimizes penalties for drug affiliated crimes, including reducing some felonies to misdemeanors and providing more resources and rehabilitation for drug addicted Ohioans, is on the November ballot.
