CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio- After beating the Boston Celtics Thursday night with a 135-102 Game 5 victory to win the Eastern Conference title for the third year in a row the Cleveland Cavaliers are again headed to the NBA Finals and will again face the Golden State Warriors, the team they beat for the championship title last year and lost to the year before.
Game 1 of the NBA Finals is Thursday, June 1 in Oakland and will air on abc at 9 pm EST.
Led by head coach Tyronn Lue, the architect behind his team's rise to stardom in the past two years, the Cavaliers finished the regular season as second in the Eastern Conference, behind the Celtics.
But fate was unkind, and Boston simply could not overcome the mega-talent of LeBron James, 32, and his teammates in the playoffs series where it counted most.
Going into Thursday's Game 5 against the Celtics Cleveland was ahead 2-1 in the series after previously defeating the Indiana Pacers to advance to the Eastern Conference semi- finals.
An Akron, Ohio native and Sports Illustrated 2016 sportsperson of the year, James scored a game high 35 points in Game 5 coupled with eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
Kyrie Irving, who dominated Game 4 against Boston with a career high 42 points, added 24 points, and Kevin Love finished with 15.
The Game 5 outcome was not necessarily a surprise, given.
The Cavs won Game 1 against Boston, 171-104.
Game 2 was a embarrassing blowout, the Cavs winning 130-86.
Game 3 was a win for Boston but only by three points, and with a final score of 111-108.
And the Cavs came back in Game 4, defeating the Celtics 112-99.
The upcoming bout between Golden State and Cleveland will mark the seventh straight trip to the Finals for James, who last night surpassed Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordon to become the NBA's all time leading scorer in the playoffs.
