CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio-American academic, author, and radio host Dr. Michael Eric Dyson will speak at 7 pm on Friday, July 15 at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church on Cleveland's east side, an event that will occur three days before the opening day of the four-day Republican National Convention, which Cleveland will host.
The speaking event is free and open-to-the-public.
The articulate and sometimes controversial Dyson, also a well-known motivational speaker, comes to Cleveland per the People's Justice and Peace Convention (PJPC), a convention of liberal leaning peace activists that offers what they say is "a response to the major parties' platforms in this election cycle."
According to PJPC organizers, Dyson is part of a weekend gathering from July 15-17 that will include other keynote speakers, films, cultural performances, workshops and work sessions dedicated to addressing the issues of social justice, economic justice, environmental justice, international justice, and voting rights.
Dyson, 57, became an ordained minister at 19-years-old.
An academician in its purest sense, Dyson holds both a master's and Ph.D. from Princeton University and is a professor of Sociology at Georgetown University.[2] He has edited or authored 18 books dealing with subjects such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr.,Marvin Gaye, Nas's debut album Illmatic, Bill Cosby, Tupac Shakur and Hurricane Katrina.
He is married to Marcia Louise, his second wife, and has two children.
Dyson has been both critical and supportive of President Obama, and Hillary Clinton as well, saying lately that Clinton, the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party, will benefit Blacks if elected president due to her "White privilege."
One of Cleveland's most prominent Black churches, Olivet is led by the Rev. Dr. Jawanza Colvin, also a brilliant Black orator like Dyson, and a Morehouse College graduate. It is also a platform for various community forums, including non-partisan venues for presidential candidates, both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders of whom spoke there in March, days before Ohio's March, 15 Democratic primary.
