CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio-Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), a Toledo Democrat whose ninth congressional district extends to Cleveland and the longest serving woman in the U.S. House of Representatives, released the following statement on Thursday calling for the immediate removal of Donald Trump from the office of the presidency following the insurrection he incited at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday that left four protesters and a police officer dead, and that temporarily halted efforts by Congress to certify the electoral college win of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden:

“Donald Trump presents a clear and present danger to the safety and security of this country and should not be in office one hour longer,” said Rep. Kaptur. “I call on Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to immediately invoke the 25th Amendment and for Congress to begin impeachment proceedings.”

Kaptur joins a growing number of Congressional Democrats, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who want the president removed from office under the 25th Amendment, or impeached, again, and this time removed from office.

They include U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Cleveland and U.S. Rep Joyce Beatty, a Columbus Democrat.

A popular Democrat and former vice president under former president Barack Obama, the nations's first Black president, Biden unseated Trump in November, winning both the electoral college and the popular vote via an election that has further divided the country along partisan lines, and racial lines.

“The deadly events that transpired yesterday were treasonous acts of insurrection carried out by a mob loyal to and inspired by President Trump," Kaptur said, while also calling for "a swift and thorough investigation of the events."

The federal lawmaker blamed the president for the mob that attempted a coup on the capitol Wednesday, Trump rallying his supporters, who came there in droves to protest the election results and what they say was a tainted election.

Congress confirmed Biden's presidential election victory Thursday morning, after two days of rioting by Trump's supporters, and the radical right.

The congresswoman said that "we must determine how they were able to breach not only into the Capitol complex, but onto the House and Senate floors, and pose a direct threat to the health and safety of members, staff, and Capitol police, as well as violate the capitol complex and architecture and historic elements."

Rep. Kaptur went on to say that "clearly this is what Trump meant when he told the Proud Boys to ‘stand back and standby’ and again yesterday when he urged those in attendance at his rally on the National Mall to march to the capitol.”

Kaptur said she is pleased to align herself with others who are also demanding Trump's immediate removal from office.

"In calling for President Trump’s removal," said Kaptur. "I am aligning myself with a growing number of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, as well as national organizations including the National Association of Manufacturers, who understand how critical the rule of law – rather than mob rule – is to maintaining our precious liberty.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is the highest ranking member of the U.S. senate who has joined Pelosi and Congressional Democrats in demanding Trump's immediate ouster as president.

Biden is set to be inaugurated on Jan 20.
