CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-BOSTON, Massachusetts-Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley (pictured), on Tuesday, defeated incumbent U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano for the Democratic nomination in Massachusetts’ seventh congressional district, an upset by a progressive Black Democratic candidate over a popular White Democrat, and one that follows the Democratic primary for governor of Florida a week earlier that saw Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum (pictured), who is Black, upset front-runner Gwen Graham.
A former member of of the U.S. House of Representatives, Graham, who is White,
is the daughter of former governor and U.S. senator Bob Graham.
is the daughter of former governor and U.S. senator Bob Graham.
Since she has no Republican opponent for the November general election, Pressley, say political pundits, is sure to head to Washington, D.C. next year as a new member of the U.S. House of Representatives, a new Black member, in fact.
She has essentially become the first Black woman in the Massachusetts congressional delegation.
Rep. Capuano, 66, is White and was first elected in 1998 to replace Joseph Kennedy in congress, winning nine more elections thereafter .
He represented the state's 8th district until it was redrawn into the 7th district in 2013.
Now he is out of a job, defeated in an upset election by Pressley, also a progressive, and a clear Obama-Clinton ally, and a native of Chicago, Illinois.
And while the Bernie Sanders-endorsed Gillum, 39, ran on a progressive platform, stressing the $15-an-hour minimum wage, and medicare for all Pressley was a Hillary Clinton backer and an aggressive supporter of Clinton, who out did Sanders and won the Democratic nomination for president in 2016, but only to ultimately lose the presidency to Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.
In November, Mayor Gillum faces Rep. Ron DeSantis, the Trump-endorsed Republican nominee for governor of Florida .
The capital and largest city in Massachusetts, the largely White city of Boston, which is 25 percent Black, is the most racially segregated city in the nation, and Cleveland, a largely Black major American city, is the country's second most segregated city nationwide.
