CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM, Cleveland, Ohio- Congress passed the Republican initiated tax bill on Wednesday, President Trump's signature legislation and the most comprehensive overhaul of the U.S. tax system in more than 30 years.
The bill, dubbed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed the House a second time on Wednesday, 224-201.
Not one congressional Democrat voted in favor of the measure that polls say 55 percent of Americans oppose.
Ohio 11th Congressional District Congresswoman Marcia L Fudge, a Warrensville Heights Democrat whose largely Black congressional district includes the city of Cleveland, said the bill raises taxes on middle and low income people and lowers taxes for the rich.
"The Republican tax bill widens the income inequality gap and makes it more difficult for working Americans to realize the American dream," said Fudge, one of two Black in congress from Ohio.
The president joined Republican lawmakers on Capital Hill on Wednesday to celebrate the victory, the president's first major victory since he took office in January.
Trump thanked House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell at the press conference and said it was fun to win.
He called the passage of the bill a Christmas gift for Americans.
"It's the largest tax cut in the history of our country," said Trump, a Republican
The bill, which keeps several personal income tax bracketsbut reduces the rate at the highest level from 37 percent to 40 percent, practically doubles standard deductions for individuals, eliminates the health care mandate in Obamacare, reduces the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent, and gives big business a break
In short, say Democrats, it helps the rich and disenfranchises the middle class and working poor.
President Trump, however, framed it as massive tax cuts for all of America.
