A Cleveland Plain Dealer article published yesterday details delinquent parking and camera ticket fines issued by the City of Cleveland and allegedly owed by Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Shirley Strickland Saffold, who some Blacks say is being harassed by the newspaper in retaliation for a $50 million lawsuit alleging privacy violations that she filed last month against the newspaper, its editor Susan Goldberg, and a host of other newspaper affiliates.
The biased article says the judge owes a total of $1 thousand in combined parking and camera infraction tickets and that her car can be towed. It goes on to quote the spokesperson for Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson on the issue.
"It is our expectation that people meet their obligations, that there are consequences for failure to pay, and that we encourage and support the Clerk's efforts to collect on all outstanding traffic penalties," Jackson Press Secretary Andrea Taylor allegedly said.
What Taylor did not say, however, is that Jackson and his subordinates are accused of harassing people throughout the state of Ohio by strong arming camera infraction payments in putting illegal holds on their licenses and registrations. State law only allows such for parking tickets that are in excess of three tickets. Because camera tickets are civil infractions the sole vehicle for securing unpaid fines is via a civil suit.
Jackson is said to be targeting Strickland Saffold because she is a Black woman and she denied a change of venue motion filed by alleged serial killer Anthony Sowell's attorneys to move the trial out of Cuyahoga County prior to being removed from the case last month by then Acting Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Pfeifer. That removal came in conjunction with an affidavit of prejudice filed against the judge by Sowell's attorneys.
Sowell is in custody and charged with several counts of aggravated murder and other criminal infractions after the remains of 11 Black women were found in an around his Imperial Ave. home in Cleveland's predominantly Black Mt. Pleasant neighborhood.
Six of the women went missing and were allegedly killed By Sowell after Jackson's all non-Black law enforcement top leadership team released Sowell from custody in 2008 following an attempted rape complaint from a Black woman branded "not credible."
The affidavit of prejudice at issue, which Pfeifer said showed no prejudice, was filed after Plain Dealer officials tapped into the judge's AOL email account and published online news venue blog comments that discussed the Sowell case and one of the attorneys, though the judge's daughter, Sydney Saffold, 23, has said that it was she, and not her mother, who made the blog comments . The younger Saffold is also suing the Plain Dealer and a host of its affiliates for alleged breach of privacy around the matter.
"Mayor Jackson is slick and dishonest and that is why he is illegally directing car registration and licence holds relative to delinquent camera ticket infractions in violation of state law," said Black Journalist Kathy Wray Coleman, who says she is a victim of a malicious prosecution by the City of Cleveland that Jackson initiated in retaliation for 38 articles that she wrote in 2008 and that were published in the Call and Post Newspaper, many to his dislike. "He loves harassing Black women and sucking up to White women, whether they are judges or of another type of acquaintance."
According to Coleman, who says she is now being threatened by operatives for Jackson who received donations from City of Cleveland affiliates, the media usually cannot get the mayor to open his mouth, but he was waiting and ready to have his press secretary blast Judge Strickland Saffold for the Plain Dealer as to its latest retaliatory ploy against the Black judge.
Since Strickland Saffold's removal from the Sowell case, Sowell's attorneys were said to have renewed their motion for a change of venue with replacement judge Dick Ambrose, a colleague of Strickland Saffold. Absent drastic measures, case law precludes Ambrose from overturning Strickland Saffold's previous denial of the change of venue request and leaves that decision to an appellate panel following trial, if an appeal is sought, Ambrose is said to be under pressure from Jackson and the mayor's Plain Dealer friends to move the trial elsewhere to minimize publicity.
Coleman says also that the Plain Dealer would rather ignore true corruption from White Judges like Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Kathleen Ann Keough and Cuyahoga Judge Timothy McGinty and instead write about parking and camera infraction tickets that a lot of judges and attorneys get on a regular basis in downtown Cleveland.
