WASHINGTON, D.C. An Akron Democrat and the youngest of Ohio's five-member Democratic Congressional Delegation, Congresswoman Emilia Sykes (OH-13) on Wednesday was among federal lawmakers who voted  against a controversial motion to remove Mike Johnson as speaker of the U.S.House of Representatives, the congresswoman said in a news release to Clevelandurbannews.com and Kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com, Ohio's Black digital news leader.

A Republican, Speaker Johnson survived the motion to oust him put on the table by MAGA Republican Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene as  Democrats joined Republicans to save his top leadership position. Lawmakers, in turn, collectively booed Greene.

The House vote to summarily dismiss Greene's motion was 359-43 with seven lawmakers voting present. Cheering broke out in the House chamber after the motion was dismissed or tabled. Only 10 House Republicans supported the motion.

Greene has accused Johnson of fraternizing with Democrats and pushing their agendas to the point of crippling public policy sought by Republicans. Johnson's congressional supporters across partisan lines who helped to save his job as speaker say its time to put aside partisan bickering for the benefit of their constituents and to work together to move the country in a forward direction. Sykes agrees.

"Political games distract from the real issues that our constituents face," said Rep Sykes as she seeks reelection in November for another two-year term. "The people of Ohio's 13th district sent me to Congress to lower costs, keep our communities safe, and grow the middle class, and that's exactly what I'll continue to do. I hope my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will join me in putting people first. Enough is enough. Stop playing games and let's get to work."

Republicans have a razor thin majority in the House and Democrats have a razor thin majority in the U.S.Senate.
