CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio- After losing to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday via the opening game of the 2019-2020 regular season, the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by veteran ballplayers Tristan Thompson and Kevin Love, won their home opener Saturday in Cleveland against the Indiana Pacers, 110-99, and at the new and resurrected home stadium, the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

The Cavs are now 1-1 and face the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 28 and the Chicago Bulls on Oct. 30, which are among several games to come.

It was the first win of the regular season for the Cavs, and against the Pacers, a team they lost to three times out of four games last year, Thompson leading his Cavaliers' team with 25 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Love with 21 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.

"When we play here for these fans we've gotta represent, " said Thompson after the game.

Collin Sexton, 20, had  18 points, five rebounds and 20 assists, and Jordan Clarkson helped seal the deal for the Cavs with 15 points.

Love, 31, was just one assist away from a triple double.

The Cavs shot 50 percent from the field and were down two points at the end of the first quarter.

At halftime they were up 18 points, and kept the lead the rest of the game.

New Cleveland head coach John Beilein, a former college basketball coach, told reporters during a post-game press conference that he is pleased that his team rose to the occasion Saturday night against the Pacers, and that it shows that hard work pays off.

It was his first NBA win.

Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach
John Beilein

"The guys were rewarded today,"  said Beilein. "They have really practiced hard at practice."

Malcolm Brogdon led the Pacers with 30 points and 10 assists, and his teammates, Domantas Sabonis and T.J. Warren, had 14 points and 12 points respectively, not enough, however, to outdo the Cavs on their home court Saturday, the Pacers now 0-2 for the 2019-2020 regular season.

The Cavs have struggled since megastar LeBron James left  for a second time at the end of the 2017-2018 season, James opting to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers via a  four-year $153.3 million contract deal.

Since then, namely during the 2018-2019 season, they ranked 14th, or second to last in the Eastern Conference.

LeBron's mega millions deal with the Lakers, who like Cleveland did not make the playoffs last year, came after the Cavaliers lost the 2018 NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors,

It was the fourth straight time the Cavs had gone to NBA Finals, the first time in 2015, though they have won only one championship title, that title won in 2016 against the Golden State, the first and only championship title in franchise history.

James is "the Cavaliers' all-time scoring leader, the NBA All-Star Game career scoring leader,  the NBA career playoff scoring leader, a three-time Finals  MVP, an Olympic gold medalist and a 14-times All Star, among other accomplishments in his 16-year NBA career.

His first departure from Cleveland in 2010, when he signed with Miami, was met with ire from Cleveland fans, some of whom held bonfires to burn his jersey.

After four seasons in Miami James ("The King") re-signed with the Cavs in 2014 and promised to bring Cleveland its first NBA championship title, which he did in 2016, the loss to the Golden State Warriors in 2018 as to the Finals upsetting James, and among a list of reasons for his unceremonious departure from Cleveland to join the Lakers that year, sources said.

Ohio Supreme Court strips chief Cuyahoga County judge of power: Chief and unfair Cuyahoga County Judge John Russo loses authority-Part 2 of a multi-part series on Cuyahoga County public corruption: New Ohio law on seeking possible removal of a municipal court judge in a case for bias or conflict via the filing of an affidavit of prejudice takes authority to decide from chief Cuyahoga County Presiding and Administrative Judge John Russo, other chief common pleas judges in Ohio, and hands it to the chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, who also determines affidavits of prejudice filed against common pleas, probate, juvenile, domestic relations, and state appellate court judges....Most affidavits of prejudice are denied regardless of the merits and some judges complained of will retaliate, data show...
