CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former Ohio senator Nina Turner, the national co-chairperson for Bernie Sanders' 2020 bid for president, is calling out President Trump as racist relative to his ongoing attacks against four Democratic congresswomen of color,Turner, a Black Democrat, saying that "if he [President Trump] comes for them, he comes for me."
Turner was livid about the president's comments that the congressional women of color go home, and expressed much of her anger over the controversy in interviews on national television, including with Don Lemon of CNN.
"The president is wrong all day long," Turner said. "And that is why we've got to get this man out."
She added that Trump, a Republican real estate mogul who is seeking reelection to another four-year-term, will do "absolutely anything, even if it is to stroke the flames of racism and bigotry and sexism."
Also a former Cleveland councilwoman and prior college history teacher, Turner has taken a leave of absence from leading Our Revolution, the political activist organization spun from Sanders' failed 2016 presidential campaign, to assist Sanders with his campaign.
"It hurts me to my core as a woman of color," said Turner of the president's racial slurs against the four freshman congresswomen. "As a Black woman in America, it certainly hurts me to my core "
Turner said that while the president will likely succeed with his base on the divisively racial issue, "it is my sincere hope that this country is ready to unite and overcome a past that is ugly, that is wicked, and to stand up against President Trump who believes that these four women deserve to be treated this way."
She said that the president's mistreatment of Pressley, Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, and Tlaib is symbolic of his mistreatment of all women of color.
The president created a fury last week by demanding that U.S. Reps Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan go home to the countries they came from, all but Omar, who is a naturalized U.S. citizen who came to America with her U.S. born parents as a child refugee, born in the U.S..

Democratic members of congress, 2020 presidential candidates and world leaders have also lashed out at the president, longtime Congressman John Lewis of Georgia calling Trump racist and an embarrassment.
The four congressional women, who have been pushing a progressive agenda in congress, are under attack for questioning racism, Islamophobia, and bigotry in America and saying that Trump, who is White, is racist, sexist, divisive and a detriment to the American people.
They are also pressuring House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to take a more aggressive stance against the president and congressional Republicans, Pelosi refusing to endorse a proposal for impeachment of the president in spite of growing support of the measure since his unbridled attack on Black women and women of color, some 100 congressional Democrats now saying they want Trump impeached, up from 85 last Wednesday, and a third of the 225-member House of Representatives, the lower chamber of congress.

"They are a symbol for all women of color in this country," said Turner , 51. "We have to stand in solidarity. "
