Ohio 9th Congressional District Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, a Toledo Democrat whose congressional district extends to Cleveland |
CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio-Ohio 9th Congressional District Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, dean of the Ohio Delegation and the longest-serving woman in the U.S. House Representatives whose congressional district extends to Cleveland, released the following statement after news that the President Trump and Mexico reached a tentative trade agreement on a range of issues, including a trade deal that could replace the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA) .
"Congress must have its say on this administration's NAFTA," said Kaptur, a Toledo Democrat. "I hope for a vote of the congress on whether the president and his team have lived up to the promises he made to America's workers in his 2016 campaign."
Congress must pass Trump's tentative agreement to make it effective, a controversial agreement the president said he will rename in place of NAFTA, if he can convince the Republican dominated congress to buy into the deal.
"We're going to call it the United States-Mexico Trade Agreement," said Trump.
The agreement reached with Mexico is in many respects a revised NAFTA, with updates.
It addresses primarily digital economy, automobiles, agriculture and labor unions.
And the core of the trade pact remains intact, and still aloows American companies to operate in Mexico and Canada without tariffs

Kaptur said that any new NAFTA must raise wages and create a level
playing field across the board, and that Trump's braggadocios posture in reaching the agreement with Mexico means very little.
"We must end the job outsourcing bonanza that has taken hold since NAFTA's passage
in 1994 and details and the fine print matter more than a hasty self-proclaimed victory," the congresswoman said.
She says she is cautiously optimistic.
As someone who fought with all I had to prevent NAFTA's passage and the trauma it
wrought on American workers, I know the devil is in the details," said Kaptur.
"I look forward to reviewing the details of this agreement as well as the
issues that remain with Canadian negotiators in the days and weeks to come."Clevelandurbannews.com and Kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com, Ohio's most read Black digital newspaper and Black blog with some 5 million views on Google Plus alone.Tel: (216) 659-0473 and Email: editor@clevelandurbannews.com.
