The Imperial Women have joined State Sen. Nina Turner (D-25), Cleveland City Councilmen Terrell Pruitt and Jeff Johnson, and the United Pastors in Mission in pushing the executive committee of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party to issue a no endorsement in the race to fill the seat on the Cleveland Municipal Court left vacant by Kathleen Ann Keough's election in Nov. to the Ohio Eighth District Court of Appeals. All are supporting Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Pinkey Carr for the seat whose support from the United Pastors in Mission brings an array of Black clergy to her campaign.
Ward leaders and the executive committee of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party will meet Sat, March 5 at 9 am at Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel School, 6928 Detroit Ave in Cleveland, to endorse judicial candidates for this year's election.
In a letter to Cleveland residents seeking support for her candidacy Carr said that "my 17-year career in public service has prepared me to be a legally astute judge whose judgment can be trusted."
Carr is a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in the predominantly Black city of Cleveland, has lived in Cleveland's Ward 1 all her life, and has had a distinguished career in the legal profession, winning the 2009 Prosecutor of the Year Award for her "exemplification of tenacity, integrity and professionalism in the pursuit of justice."
The seat is currently held by Judge Lynn McLaughlin Murray, who was appointed in Jan. by former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland to complete Keough's unexpired term, which ends this year. And in that short time she has proven to be a judge that grassroots activists say has no respect for the law or for the Black community and women. Last week the Imperial Women called for her immediate resignation from the bench.
"We do not know whether Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson is supporting McLaughlin Murray," said Kathy Wray Coleman, a leader of the Imperial Women. "But what we do know is that his endorsement is now the kiss of death since the mayor supports Gov. Kasich and Senate Bill 5 to break the unions of his own fire fighters, police, and teachers. And the mayor bragged during his ticket only State of the City address yesterday that he will now privatize Cleveland's public schools for Republican operatives and hire a corporate CEO to lead the largely Black school district, and will bring in corporate big wigs to take the jobs of classified employees and to undermine teachers and the predominantly Black students and majority Black district administrators."
Data reveal that McLaughlin-Murray is revoking bonds and issuing warrants against Blacks and women without the bond forfeiture hearing required to be scheduled before a neutral magistrate by Cleveland Municipal Clerk of Court Earle Turner per the local rules of the Cleveland Municipal Court. Additionally, said Coleman, the judge is scheduling hearings and not telling Black defendants what type of hearing it is to trick them into appearing for the wrong reason so that she can illegally jail them. She is also, said Coleman, usurping the role of the magistrate to hold bond forfeiture hearings allegedly so that she can deny them and target Blacks that political operatives and corrupt non-Black judges want her to target, allegedly in exchange for judicial support for her upcoming run to hold on to the seat. And upon reinstating an illegally taken bond the judge then falsely denotes on the case docket that the previously revoked bond was a personal bond so that she and Turner can steal the monies originally put up for the bond.
