From the Metro Desk of the DeterminerWeekly.Com and the Kathy Wray Coleman Online News Blog and Media Network
Press Release sent June 27, 2010
Contacts: Tina Bronaugh at 216-253-6484 and Kathy Wray Coleman at 216-932-3114
To: All Media
Who: Tina Bronaugh, mother of arrested protesting Black female Collinwood High School students Destini and DeAsia Bronaugh, community members and grassroots factions.
What: Press Conference on the sidewalk in front of Collinwood High School that is sponsored by the Bronaugh family with the support of area grassroots factions and others.
When: Monday, June 28, 2010 at 1 pm
Where: On the sidewalk in front of Cleveland's Collinwood High School, 15210 St. Claire Ave. in Cleveland, Oh.
Why: It is in response to the dismissal on Wednesday at the request of Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason of two felony counts of assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest against Collinwood High School student Destini Bronaugh that came in retaliation for participation by Destiny Bronaugh and her younger sister DeAsia Bronaugh on May 13 in an organized student walkout at Collinwood High School to protest the layoffs of 545 district teachers and the slated closings of 14 of Cleveland's public schools. (Note: DeAsia was arrested for an alleged curfew violation that a juvenile court judge has since dismissed and Destini was arrested and allegedly harassed by the police officers, all of whom are White, for speaking up for her younger sister. No probable cause exists to prosecute either Destini Bronauagh or her sister, DeAsia Bronaugh. The White male student organizer of the protest, whom we support, was not arrested and the girls were arrested after following a request by a teacher to return to school where Collinwood High School security then put them out to be allegedly harassed by police. Student protests on issues of public concern are protected under the free speech clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Any upcoming charges against DeAsia Bronaugh would be illegal. Also, no further charges should come against Destini Bronaugh and the press conference will in part address this issue as well as other affiliated matters).
In addition to Tina Bronaugh speakers at the press conference include the following:
-Kathy Wray Coleman, journalist, community activist and leader of the Imperial Women, a diverse group formed following the tragedy as to the murders of 11 Black women on Imperial Ave. in Cleveland, Oh at the alleged hands of suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell.
