Moonlight wins Oscar for best picture and of the six Blacks nominated for 2017 Oscars acting roles, Viola Davis wins best supporting actress for 'Fences' and Mahershala Ali wins best supporting actor for 'Moonlight,' a Black coming of age film....Washington and Negga lose out for best actor and actress respectively, among others, as Harris and Spencer and others lose as best supporting nominees to Davis.... La La Land was mistakenly announced the winner for best picture over 'Moonlight,' one of the worst blunders in Oscar history, critics say....By editor Kathy Wray Coleman of www.clevelandurbannews.com and www.kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com, Ohio's Black digital news leaders

"Moonlight' was nominated for an Oscar for best picture with Barry Jenkins nominated as to best director and best screenplay, Naomi Harris was nominated for best supporting actress, and Mahershala Ali as best supporting actor. The coming of age film did win the best picture award and Ali won for best supporting actor, though Harris lost to Viola Davis for 'Fences,' and Jenkins was outdone for director by 'La La Land's' Damian Chazelle. Posing from left are Alex Hibbert, the young star of the Oscar nominated film 'Moonlight,'  Oscar winning actor  Mahershala Ali,  Oscar nominated director Barry Jenkins, and Oscar nominated actress Naomi Harris.
Viola Davis and Denzel Washington (pictured) were both nominated for their starring roles in the motion picture film 'Fences,' Washington for best actor, and Davis for best supporting actress, Davis winning and Washington going home empty handed, though he has won Oscars previously for best supporting actor for the film 'Glory' and best actor for 'Training Day."

Playwright August Wilson, who wrote the 1983 Pulitzer Prize winning play "Fences," which was adapted for motion picture purposes and  was an unsuccessful  contender for best picture for the 2017 Academy Awards

Ruth Negga was nominated for best actress for her role in the film "Loving," the only Black woman to garner an Oscar nomination for best actress for the 2017 Academy Awards. She lost out to Emmy Stone for 'La La Land."
Octavia Spenser (far right) received a 2017 Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her starring role in "Hidden Figures," which tells the story of Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Spenser) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), three black women who played crucial roles when NASA launched an American into orbit for the first time. "Hidden Figures" was among the nominees for best picture but lost to 'Moonlight." Spenser lost out to Davis at the 89th Academy Awards Sunday night, Feb 26.

CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM-HOLLYWOOD, California-Black actors Viola Davis and Mahershala  Ali won Oscars at last night's 89th Academy Awards and the coming of age Black motion picture 'Moonlight' by Black director Barry Jenkins won best picture, the latter after seasoned presenters Warren Beatty and Fay Dunaway, who starred together in the 1941 landmark film 'Bonnie and Clyde,' incorrectly named 'La La Land,' and after the pair was purportedly handed the wrong envelope.

The blunder, by some standards, will go down as the worst in Oscar history.

Ali won best actor for the critically revered 'Moonlight,' and Davis, best actress for August Wilson's critically acclaimed 'Fences,'  best picture nominee directed by Denzel Washington, a best actor nominee who has won previous Oscar for his best supporting role in 'Glory,' and for best actor in 'Training Day,' but went home empty handed on Sunday.

Both Octavia Spenser and Naomi Harris were, like Davis, nominated for best supporting actress, Spencer for 'Hidden Figures,' also an unsuccessful best picture nominated film, and, for Harris 'Moonlight'.

Ruth Negga lost out and did not win for best actress relative to her starring role in  'Loving,' summing up the six actor/actress nominees as wins by Davis and Ali, and four 2017 academy award losses of  Washington, Negga, Spenser and Harris, an outcome that topped last year's awards ceremony when not one Black actor or actress was nominated.CLICK HERE TO READ THE CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM ARTICLE ON THE BLACK ACTORS AND ACTRESSES NOMINATED FOR 2017 OSCARS

"La La Land' did win six academy awards, the most of the evening, including Damian Chazelle for best director, and Emma Stone, best actress, Chazelle taking the best director nod from Jenkins and four others.

Kenneth Lonnergan's 'Manchester by the Sea' won for best original screen play and for best actor, Casey Affleck, the younger brother of actor, director and screenwriter Ben Affleck, taking home that notable award. CLICK HERE TO GO TO OSCARS.COM FOR A FULL LIST OF THE 2017 OSCAR WINNERS
