RE: Reps. Fudge and Edwards Include STEM Amendment as Part of Three-Year Authorization that Sets Sustainable Path for NASA

Washington, DC – Reps Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) and Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) had an important STEM amendment adopted in H.R. 5751, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Authorization Act of 2010. Approved by the Committee of Science and Technology, the amendment directs the NASA Administrator to fund pilot programs for students, with a special emphasis on seeking involvement from underserved and underrepresented minority populations. The projects will engage students in science and engineering, and foster teamwork, project management, and problem solving skills.

“I am proud that my amendment was included in the final bill that will foster learning in the sciences, particularly in our most vulnerable communities,” said Congresswoman Edwards. “This is an opportunity for NASA to continue the phenomenal impact it has had in scientific research and development, and to do so for our young people. I look forward to seeing the types of projects NASA develops, and witnessing the wonderful benefits they will produce.”

Fudge, who represents the 11th Congressional District, which includes parts of Cleveland and its eastern suburbs, commented, "I've seen what hands-on education in science and engineering can do, propelling students from underserved backgrounds to excel and innovate. These young minds have much to offer. STEM education is the portal. Open it wider and America wins."
