Former President Donald Trump and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine

Ohio-Former President Donald Trump blasted Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Saturday for his veto of Ohio House Bill 68 on Friday, legislation that would have banned critical gender-affirming health care for minors and precluded transgender student-athletes from playing on sports teams that align with their gender identity. And he says he wants nothing more to do with DeWine, a falling out of sorts between the two powerful Republicans as Ohio's Republican primary nears with Trump the current national front-runner for the Republican nomination for president.

DeWine vetoed the controversial legislation that drew protests statewide despite its overwhelming passage by Ohio's Republican-dominated state legislature. In addition to banning child sex changes, the legislation also prohibited biological males from competing in women’s sports.

The former president posted the following statement against Ohio's Republican governor on the social media site Truth Social:

DeWine has fallen to the Radical Left. No wonder he gets loudly booed in Ohio every time I introduce him at Rallies, but I won’t be introducing him any more. I’m finished with this “stiff.” What was he thinking. The bill would have stopped child mutilation, and prevented men from playing in women’s sports. Legislature will hopefully overturn. Do it FAST!!! breitbart.com/sports/2023/12/2

Trump's opposition to DeWine over the issue, which has also caught the attention of some key right-wing Republicans in Ohio and elsewhere who supported the legislation, is contrary to the position taken by some prominent and more liberal Democrats in Ohio such as Ohio Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, who released the following statement on Friday in support of the governor's veto.

"Ohioans have spoken loud and clear – they don't want the government involved in their personal, private health care decisions," said state Sen. Antonio, a Lakewood Democrat who's 23rd district includes 14 of Cleveland's 17 wards. "Parents should have the right to make important physical and mental health care decisions for their children. I applaud the governor for exercising due diligence and discernment in making the decision to veto House Bill 68, which would have taken away the rights of parents. I want to thank the thousands of advocates, kids, parents, religious and business leaders who spoke out against this dangerous bill – this veto belongs to you. The fight for LGBTQ+ equal rights will continue until all may enjoy the freedom to live their authentic lives without government interference."

Whether Ohio's GOP dominated state legislature will seek to overturn the veto remains to be seen, given that the governor broke from his party in vetoing the legislation. Gov DeWine said via a press conference on Friday that decisions about gender-affirming care should be left to families and their doctors.
