Cleveland's public school district closes Glenville High School due to teacher absences, a rare kind of thing in public education.....What is going on?

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Metropolitan School District officials abruptly closed Glenville High School Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022 “because of staff absences.”

CMSD big wigs confirmed the closing action across their social media platforms Thursday morning, including on Facebook.

“There will be no remote learning,” CMSD added, though district CEO Dr  Eric Gordon has not elaborated on why so many teachers would take off at once after just returning from the Thanksgiving Holiday break. Whether the teacher absences are COVID-19 related also has not been clarified by school district officials.

One Facebook participant shot back in response to the closing announcement and posted that "the teachers have spoken."

The high school is located on the city's majority Black east side in the historic Glenville Neighborhood in Ward 9

This is a developing story given that it is a rarity for an entire high school to close in a public school district in a major American city due to teacher absences. Cleveland teachers, most of whom are white suburbanites, work under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement.

The largely Black Cleveland Metropolitan School District of some 30,000 students, formerly the Cleveland Municipal School District and previously the Cleveland Public School District, is a public school district in the U.S. state of Ohio that serves almost all of the city of Cleveland. The district covers 79 square miles. It is controlled by the city mayor per state law and is  the second largest preK-12 district in the state. The school district has 68 schools that are for kindergarten to eighth grade students and 39 schools for high school aged students.

Ousted University Heights Mayor Susan Infeld, whom voters booted out of office Tuesday evening following claims of racism against Black residents, and alleged theft in office, and because she is running a theft ring in the city of illegal foreclosures on the homes of Cuyahoga County residents along with a corrupt and racist police department that she leads as safety director.
