CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM, CLEVELAND, Ohio-As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the legacy of the late and legendary Cleveland mayor Carl B Stokes, and his late  brother, congressman Louis Stokes, also a legend in his own right, University Hospitals, in partnership with the initiative “Stokes: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” will present Soul Science Lab’s “Soundtrack ‘63”, a live, multimedia hip hop concert and stage production depicting the African-American experience and Civil Rights Movement in America.

The event  will be held on Friday, Sept., 15, 2017 at the Cuyahoga Community College  Campus (Tri-C) auditorium in Cleveland beginning at 7:30pm.

It is free and open-to-the public with a private matinee performance exclusively for the Cleveland Municipal School District followed by the public performance at 7:30 p.m.

Also on hand to perform will be local artists like Lucretia Bolden and Basheer Jones, a Cleveland native and Morehouse graduate and community activist.

Carl B. Stokes was a former Cleveland judge and the first Black mayor of Cleveland and of a major American city, and his older brother and only sibling,  Louis , was a Civil Rights attorney and the first Black in congress from Ohio who led Ohio's largely Black 11th congressional district, formerly the 21st congressional district.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Carl  Stokes' historic election in 1967 as Cleveland mayor. 

"Consistent with University Hospitals' core values of excellence, diversity, integrity, compassion and teamwork, Soundtrack '63 is a fitting historical tribute to the timeless legacy of Mayor Stokes and Congressman Stokes," said Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, MD, chief clinical diversity officer at University Hospitals.

The concert is a tribute to the legacy of Carl and Louis Stokes with a look back at the Civil Rights era of the 1960s, an event that is part of year-long commemoration of the Stokes brothers.

The production will connect generations through an immersing video of pivotal highlights of the Civil Rights Movement along with live performances of spirituals, protest songs, hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul and popular 20th century music performed by an 18-piece orchestra and a soul stirring vocal ensemble.

Carl Stokes and his brother, Louis , who served 30 years as a member of the United States House of Representatives before retiring in 1998, played key roles in the advancement of Cleveland and the nation through the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. 

From the Black empowerment songs of James Brown to the outcries for justice in Ferguson, “Soundtrack '63” illuminates attention around the Civil Rights Movement, one of the single most important movements in history with messages that remain relevant today, organizers said. 

Most recently the popular duo was featured in TheRoot.com’s Black History Month series and VICE.com's publication, the creators for their 360 degree video, "I Can't Breathe." 

With on-screen commentary from some of the movement’s renown voices, including motivational speaker and intellectual, Dr. Cornel West, and esteemed poet Sonia Sanchez, Soul Science Lab duo Chen Lo (creative director) and Asante Amin (musical director), take the audience on a journey through milestone events in African-American history, highlighting the year 1963, which was four years before Carl B. Stokes was elected mayor of Cleveland.
