The Cleveland branch NAACP will hold its election for officers and executive committee members Sun., Nov. 14 from 2-5 PM at Cathedral Church of God in Christ in Cleveland, 2940 Martin Luther King Dr.

Cleveland Attorney George Forbes, who is running for another two-year term as president after announcing at the branch's September meeting that he was tired and had had enough, is facing opposition from Cleveland area attorney Lawrence Floyd, a former Assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor who resigned in disrepute, and husband to controversial Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Judge Alison Nelson Floyd.

Forbes has put together a slate of six candidates for offices, including himself, that consists of only one female, and her role is NAACP secretary. In addition to Arlene Anderson as secretary, others running on the Forbe's slate are Cleveland Attorney James Hardiman for 1st Vice President, Bishop E.F. Perry for 2nd Vice President, Dr. Eugene Jordon for 3rd Vice President and Amos Z. Mahsua, who is running for branch treasurer.

In a letter to members pushing the Forbes slate, Forbes listed recent accomplishments by the area NAACP as seeking jobs for Ohio's upcoming casinos, donating $25 thousand to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District for student uniforms, suggesting intervention strategies as to the alleged mistreatment of Blacks in Cleveland's Warehouse District, and working with Cleveland Clinic to retain Huron Road Hospital in East Cleveland, though the Clinic is allegedly behind its closing, reports reveal.

"Mr. Forbes and Attorney Floyd are one and the same as far as we are concerned and we shall hold which ever one is elected accountable thereafter for not standing up for disenfranchised Black women," said Kathy Wray Coleman, a local journalist and leader of the Imperial Women. "I have dealt with both of these men on community issues and matters impacting Black women and neither will stand up for Black women where it counts since Forbes has appointed Floyd to the complaint committee where they ignore legitimate complaints to the local NAACP chapter to keep money coming in as attorneys and to protect corrupt White judges like Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Kathleen Ann Keough and Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Timothy McGinty, who harasses Black women by jailing them naked without charges and sends Black men to prison saying they have violated probation when the probation period is over."

Coleman said that Lawrence Floyd's candidacy for president was probably planned to give Forbes an opponent since the two are friends and they want it to look like Mr. Forbes won by a lot, if he in fact wins, since Floyd is not even aggressively campaigning for the position.

Forbes and the local NAACP chapter have come under fire in recent months for ignoring issues impacting Black women, including the Imperial Avenue Murders, where alleged serial killer Anthony Sowell allegedly murdered six of his 11 black female victims after he was released from custody in 2008 following an attempted rape complaint from Gladys Wade, who got away and told CNN , via a story that ran last week, that police said blood lined the walls of the Sowell home and it "smelled of death."

Coleman said that Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson can get away with failing to appoint neither a Black nor woman as city law director, chief prosecutor, chief of police, safety director or ems commissioner in a predominantly Black city because Forbes, Floyd and other Black male leaders will not speak up.

Other ignored issues involving Black women, grassroots activists say, include attempts by Keough, a friend and political pawn to Jackson and Forbes, to illegally sentence Coleman for allegedly resisting arrest when sole White male arresting Deputy Sheriff Gerald Pace did not accuse her of a crime or even testify as required by the Sixth Amendment.

Coleman said that Keough has harassed her for Forbes and Jackson in retaliation for her activism and writings around issues impacting Black women, including the Imperial Avenue Murders, and in exchange for Jackson's endorsement for a seat on the Ohio Eighth District Court of Appeals, which she barely won in this year's November election against unknown criminal attorney and Republican, Brian Moriarty.

Issues raised by area grassroots factions also include the celebrated case of 24-year-old college student Rebecca Whitby, who was allegedly beat up and called "nigger" by Cleveland police, and the malicious prosecution by the prosecutorial team of Jackson of Destini Bronaugh, 19,. for participating in a peaceful student protest around school closings and teacher layoffs in May at Cleveland's Collinwood High School. And when Cleveland police branded the naked murdered body of Angel Bradley-Crocket a "deer" earlier this year as it lay along highway I 90 in Cleveland, Forbes said nothing.

"Mr. Forbes and the NAACP need to stand up for Black women and we will again seek support from the NAACP after the election," said Tina Bronaugh, a member of the Imperial Women and Destini Bronaugh's mother. "We are tired of Black women being subject to police brutality, malicious prosecutions, and neglect around the murders of 11 Black women at the hands of Cleveland city officials without an outcry from women or men with the Cleveland NAACP ."

Destini Bronaugh is awaiting trial before Keough on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and obstruction of official business brought by Cleveland Law Director Robert Triozzi on behalf of the City of Cleveland. Triozzi, who is a Jackson appointee and also Keough's lawyer, handpicked Keough to preside over the case in violation of the random draw rule. She recently urged Destini Bronaugh to take probation before judgment on the charges where after she serves it her record on the charges will be swiped clean, an action Keough often pursues in cases where she knows the prosecution is malicious and the city is potentially liable.

The Bronaugh family responded by firing Cleveland Attorney Terry Gilbert, who was representing Destini Bronaugh pro bono and who pushed the Keough offer, and hiring and paying a team new lawyers to proceed to trial in the case.

Forbes, a former Cleveland City Council president and unsuccessful candidate for Cleveland mayor, was first elected president of the NAACP in 1992, defeating former city councilwoman and prior Cleveland School Board Member Mildred Madison, and the Rev. Larry Harris of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland. Over 2,000 people reportedly turned out to vote in that election and the outspoken Forbes had been unchallenged until Floyd stepped to the plate this year.
